Crown Castle Announces Executive Management Promotions And Organizational Enhancements

April 4, 2000 at 12:00 AM EDT
APRIL 4, 2000 – HOUSTON, TEXAS – Crown Castle International Corp. (NASDAQ:TWRS) today announced that it has created an Office of the Chairman and made positive organization changes with key personnel within the Company, effective April 1, 2000.

Ted B. Miller, Jr., Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, stated, “Esablishing the Office of the Chairman formalizes what is already fact -- Crown Castle’s (CCIC) success is primarily due to our collective intellectual capital and our teams’ ability to respond instantly to the fast paced and rapidly changing  business environment. I believe that these changes strategically position us to accelerate our leadership in the wireless infrastructure industry.

“These changes will also provide us greater management depth and recognize the need to more fully utilize our rapid integration processes for our acquisition and development initiatives globally,” continued Mr. Miller. “We will continue to build upon the reason why our customers have outsourced to us in the past, which has been not only our understanding of their technology but our ability to operate in a given technological sector. And given that our customers are global, the core objective of this Office will be to  establish a global strategic focus for our business ventures.

“I have relied on the individual expertise of each of my team members to ensure that every decision we made was looked at from a multi-disciplinary viewpoint,” added Mr. Miller. “I am convinced that the best decisions come about this way. The following individuals are being promoted to the newly formed Office of the Chairman. In their new roles, the team will also continue to provide strategic guidance to our operating entities:

  • David Ivy, who has led Crown Castle’s growth into prominence within the wireless industry since 1997 as President of CCIC, is being promoted to Vice-Chairman – Global Mergers and Acquisitions.
  • Alan Rees, formerly President and Chief Operating Officer of Crown Castle UK (CCUK), is being promoted to the new position of Executive Vice President – Technology for CCIC.
  • Charles Green, formerly Chief Financial Officer, will assume the new position of Executive Vice President of Global Finance.
  • George Reese will continue as Executive Vice President – International.
  • John Kelly, who has been the President and Chief Operating Officer of the U.S. subsidiary Crown Castle USA (CCUS), is being promoted to President and Chief Operating Officer of CCIC.

“Given our focus on technology and operational capabilities, it is important to have an executive who is focused solely on technology in the Office of the Chairman,” stated Mr. Miller. “With a man of Alan Rees’s caliber in this position, we believe we can provide even better service to our global customers and continue to garner the kind of confidence in operations that have resulted in our customers outsourcing to CCIC. Our focus on technology is particularly important as the telecommunication industry becomes more integrated as it rapidly moves into the digital and Internet Protocol (IP) world.

“John Kelly’s extraordinary leadership in flawlessly assimilating four major acquisitions, while building the technical and financial infrastructure within his U.S. operations, has made him the logical choice for promotion to President and COO of CCIC,” said Mr. Miller.

“Reporting to Mr. Kelly will be the following staff:

  • Ed Wallander, formerly the CCIC Chief Information Officer, will now be the President and Chief Operating Officer of CCUS and its subsidiaries.
  • Michael Schueppert, formerly the Director of Sales and Marketing for CCUK, who will now be the Senior Vice President of Marketing and Business Development for CCIC.
  • Benjamin Moreland, newly promoted to the role of Chief Financial Officer for CCIC. Ben was formerly the Sr. Vice President of Finance and Treasury for CCIC.
  • Blake Hawk, Executive Vice President and General Counsel.
  • Robert Giles, formerly the Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer of CCUK, who will now be the President and Chief Operating Officer of CCUK.
  • Peter Abery, recently hired as the Managing Director of our new Australasian subsidiary, Crown Castle Australia.

“We have learned a great deal about the development of wireless technology from our experience operating on three different continents and believe that this action will help ensure that we capture ‘best in class’ operational and financial results for our shareholders,” concluded Mr. Miller.
