Crown Castle Responds To Recent Release By The United Kingdom’s Secretary Of State For Trade And Industry Regarding France Telecom

DECEMBER 16, 1999 – HOUSTON, TEXAS – Crown Castle International Corp. (the "Company") (NASDAQ:TWRS) announced that it has reviewed the brief press release today regarding the proposed investment by France Telecom in NTL. The Company has been closely following developments in the review process by the UK competition authorities since France Telecom’s proposed investment in NTL was announced in July. Now that the UK Secretary of State has made his decision, the Company will begin investigating any undertakings and its potential implications for Crown Castle. The Company is discussing the situation with France Telecom and it would be premature to discuss specifics until the Company has had a chance to review the appropriate documents.

Under existing agreements between the Company and TéléDiffusion de France International S.A. (TdF), a subsidiary of France Telecom, TdF holds certain governance rights related to the governance of the Company and its UK business. In addition, a TdF subsidiary is a significant shareholder of the Company.
